      <image:title>New Page - Bacteria</image:title>
<image:caption>Under aerobic conditions, beneficial bacteria create micro-aggregates to build soil structure. This organic matter helps to prevent nutrient leaching and increase water holding capacity. When evaluating our soils, we’re looking for significant species diversity (based on morphology) as well as overall quantities.</image:caption>

      <image:title>New Page - Fungal Hyphae</image:title>
<image:caption>Fungi are essential for a healthy soil food web. The individual hairs are called hyphae whereas the entire vegetative mat is referred to as mycelium. Beneficial fungi create macro-aggregates to build soil structure. Beneficial hyphae are determined by examining their coloration, wide diameter, length, and appearance of uniform septa (cross walls of hyphae).</image:caption>

      <image:title>New Page - Protozoa</image:title>
<image:caption>Protozoa include amoeba, flagellates, and ciliates. Amoeba and flagellates are beneficial protozoa which thrive in aerobic soil conditions. Ciliates are facultative protozoa which indicate the existence anaerobic conditions. Each are best identified by their motility (amoebas- pseudopod, flagellates- flagella tail, ciliates- cilia or hair like structures surrounding their body). This image pictures a testate amoeba, center.</image:caption>

      <image:title>New Page - Nematodes</image:title>
<image:caption>There are four kinds of nematodes relevant to soil microbiology: bacterial, fungal, root-feeding, and predatory (predate root-feeders). While root-feeding nematodes are parasitic and not desirable, the other three types of nematodes provide essential functions in nutrient cycling. Nematodes are identified by their mouth parts. Pictured here is a bacterial feeding nematode.</image:caption>

      <image:title>New Page - Micro-arthropods</image:title>
<image:caption>Soil micro-arthropods include small invertebrate animals with a exoskeleton and segmented body. They play a valuable role in the soil food web and building soil structure. Insect larva are also sometimes observed in samples and can be indicative of anaerobic conditions. Pictured center is a curled up insect larva. It is important to observe the overall balance of aerobic versus anaerobic indicators when evaluating soil samples.</image:caption>
