The individual hairs are called hyphae whereas the entire vegetative mat is referred to as mycelium. Beneficial fungi create macro-aggregates to build soil structure. Amoeba and flagellates are beneficial protozoa which thrive in aerobic soil conditions. Ciliates are facultative protozoa which indicate the existence anaerobic conditions. While root-feeding nematodes are parasitic and not desirable, the other three types of nematodes provide essential functions in nutrient cycling. Nematodes are identified by their mouth parts.
